Safety Center releases Social Media alert

The Ohio School Safety Center shared a report from the Federal Bureau of Investigation regarding the escalation of "financial sextortion" of teenagers - someone tricking a minor into sending them sexually explicit photos or videos which are then used to blackmail the minor into sending them money or gift cards to prevent the release of the images or videos to family and friends.  A few recommendations from the FBI:
  • Don't assume your child is safe online - children affected by sextortion are as young as 8 years old
  • Know that all forms of social media, gaming and digital platforms can pose a risk to children
  • Review internet and social media use and settings by checking your child's apps, keeping their profiles private, and consider banning the use of connected devices in bedrooms.
